Jammu: In a significant operation aimed at ensuring national security and protecting the interests of Jammu and Kashmir residents, authorities arrested more than 50 individuals, including seven married couples, on Tuesday. The crackdown targeted those harboring Rohingya immigrants and aiding their stay with illegal documents in Jammu, according to local police.
Inspector General of Police for the Jammu zone, Anand Jain, informed reporters that the day-long drive resulted in the registration of about a dozen FIRs. Over 30 individuals were detained for questioning during searches conducted in 30 Rohingya settlements across Jammu city. Jain emphasized that the police would explore various angles, including potential involvement in human trafficking.
The searches yielded a substantial amount of evidence, including Aadhaar cards, ration cards, voter ID cards, revenue records, rent deeds, passbooks, mobile phones, and SIM cards, Jain added. Earlier reports indicated that 21 people were arrested from Kishtwar, Ramban, Poonch, and Rajouri districts, while 10 Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals faced charges in Doda.
Police officer Pathak who was supervising the crackdown, said that about 30 locations within seven police stations were searched in Jammu city. The Rohingya crisis has seen thousands entering India illegally through Bangladesh, seeking refuge in Jammu and other parts of the country due to persecution in Myanmar.
Thousands of Rohingyas entered Bharat illegally through Bangladesh and took shelter in Jammu and other parts of the country following persecution in Myanmar. In March 2021, a verification drive revealed that over 250 Rohingyas, including women and children, were living illegally in Jammu city. They were subsequently lodged in a holding center within the Kathua Sub-Jail.
