New Delhi: Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, has announced a financial aid of Rs 900 crore to Tamil Nadu, suffering due to the aftermath of heavy rains. The state has reported 31 deaths due to the ongoing rains over the last few days.

Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Central Government had already allocated Rs 900 crore in two phases, and it will be available for immediate use within this financial year. She also mentioned that the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has advanced equipment for forecasting rainfall.

Criticising Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s absence during the crisis, Nirmala Sitharaman alleged that the Chief Minister was in Delhi with the INDI Alliance while Chennai was facing a big tragedy.

On Thursday, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced financial aid of Rs 6,000 for flood-affected individuals in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts, with Rs 1,000 allocated for Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts.

Several parts of Thoothukudi district remain without electricity. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in coordination with the Thoothukudi District Administration, is providing assistance to stranded individuals.
