New Delhi: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, All India Congress Committee (AICC) is undergoing a major overhaul. Priyanka Vadra has been removed from the charge of Uttar Pradesh. General Secretary, Avinash Pandey, has been appointed to oversee UP. Priyanka will continue as General Secretary without any special charge.
The AICC has also decided to put Ramesh Chennithala in charge of Maharashtra. Sachin Pilot will oversee Chhattisgarh.
Deepa Dasmunsi will supervise the party systems in Kerala and Lakshadweep, along with holding the additional responsibility for Telangana.
The organization has retained KC Venugopal as the General Secretary. Jairam Ramesh heads the media department, while Ajay Maken serves as the treasurer. Milind Deora and Vijay Inder Singla serve as co-treasurers. Tariq Anwar, who was previously in charge of Kerala, has also been relieved from overseeing the states.
The Congress had appointed Priyanka Vadra as the General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh in January 2019 with high expectations. However, the party showed a miserable performance in the Lok Sabha elections that followed, which saw the Congress losing one of the two seats it had from Uttar Pradesh. The situation was similar in the assembly elections that followed.
Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress has hurdles in Uttar Pradesh, including seat-sharing with the Samajwadi Party. That is what prompted such a massive reshuffle.
