New Delhi: A Muslim cleric got irritated with Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Nusrat Jahan for marrying a Jain businessman and wearing sindhoor and bangles like Hindu women.
The intolerant reaction came from the Mufti of Jamia Sheikh-ul-Hind, Asad Quasmi, who found the actor turned politician’s actions as un-Islamic.
Mufti Asad Quasmi said, “After investigation, we got to know that she married into the Jain religion, Islam says that a Muslim can only marry a Muslim. Second, I want to say that Nusrat Jahan is an actor and these actors do not care about religion. They do what they feel like doing. This is what she showcased in Parliament.”
However, the BJP leader, Sadhvi Prachi came in her defence and sharply reacted to the Muslim cleric’s intolerance towards the TMC MP.
She said, “If a Muslim woman marries a Hindu and wears bindi, bicchwe, mangalsutra, the Muslim clerics call it haraam. I feel sorry for their intellect but many Muslim men trap our Hindu daughters in the name of love jihad and ask them to wear burqa, then that is not haram. That is justified for them.”
Nusrat Jahan, a former actor, is a first time Member of Parliament representing the Basirhat in West Bengal on a TMC ticket. She was spotted in Parliament wearing sindhoor and bangles and dressed up as a Hindu woman. She had married Nikhil Jain on 19 June.
Nusrat Jahan’s entry to Parliament attracted media hype and also criticism for her inexperience in politics. The selfie photographs she took with another actor turned politician and TMC MP Mimi Chakraborty was widely scorned at. They were seen as not taking their position seriously.
