New Delhi: Bharat has surpassed China to claim the second position in the global ranking of countries with the largest road networks, according to information released by The World Ranking’s “X” page. Topping the list is the United States, but Bharat’s road infrastructure has witnessed remarkable growth, with a total of 67,00,000 km of roads.
Over the past nine years, there has been a 59 percent increase in the length of national highways in Bharat. This growth has propelled Bharat ahead of China, showcasing the country’s rapid development in national highway infrastructure. Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced in a press conference last June that the total length of national highways, which stood at 91,287 kilometres in 2013–14, would reach 1,45,240 kilometres by 2022–23. The next goal is to extend Bharat’s road network to cover an extensive 5.89 million kilometres by 2024.
Several important expressways, such as the Yamuna Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and Eastern Peripheral Expressway, serve as prime examples of Bharat’s investments in enhancing road connectivity between major cities. This focus on infrastructure development has not only boosted connectivity but has also led to a remarkable surge in revenue from highway and road construction.
Over the past nine years, toll collection revenue has witnessed growth, from Rs 4,770 crore to Rs 41,352 crore. This increase underscores the commitment of the central government to the development of the country’s road network.
