TMC Leader Shankar Adhya Arrested in Ration Scam; ED Team Attacked by Supporters in Kolkata Kolkata: In the ongoing investigations into the alleged ration scam in West Bengal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Shankar Adhya, a prominent TMC leader and former chairman of Bongaon Municipality. The arrest took place during the early hours of Saturday at Adhya’s residence in Simultola, Bongaon, following extensive searches conducted by the agency at properties associated with him and his family members, spanning at least 17 hours on Friday.
After the arrest, supporters of Adhya reportedly attempted to obstruct the investigators and hurled stones at their vehicles. To regain control of the situation, CRPF personnel accompanying the ED team had to resort to baton-charging the crowd. This incident marks the second attack on the agency, with the first occurring in Sandeshkhali in the South 24 Parganas district on Friday. During that episode, a mob vandalized ED vehicles, causing grievous injuries to three officers, who also had their personal belongings snatched.
Shankar Adhya is known to have close ties with state minister Jyotipriyo Mallick, who was arrested last year in connection with the same alleged scam. In addition to searching properties linked to Adhya, the ED conducted raids at the residences of his in-laws, associates, and an ice cream factory associated with the accused TMC leader. The developments underscore the intensifying scrutiny on political figures in the state regarding corruption allegations.
