Dehradun: Fulfilling a promise outlined in its election manifesto, the Uttarakhand state BJP government is gearing up to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by calling for a special session of the Assembly later this month. State Finance Minister Premchand Agrawal, in an interview with the media, revealed that the government is poised to take a significant stride towards the implementation of the UCC in January.
Insider information suggests that the government intends to pass the UCC Bill in the upcoming assembly session scheduled for the last week of January. This special session is anticipated to follow the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22. Another session is on the horizon for February, focusing on the state budget.
Historically, the UCC was applicable in Goa, with its implementation predating independence. On May 27, 2022, the Uttarakhand government formed an expert committee to oversee the implementation of the UCC in the state and review laws pertaining to the personal matters of its citizens. This initiative was announced during the inaugural cabinet meeting following the formation of the BJP government in the state.
