New Delhi: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took a diplomatic step on Monday by summoning Maldives High Commissioner Ibrahim Shaheeb amidst an ongoing row. Shaheeb was called to the ministry in Delhi’s South Block, where he was seen leaving shortly after the meeting. The summons comes a day after the Indian government expressed concerns regarding derogatory comments made by certain Maldivian ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On Sunday, President Mohamed Muizzu’s government in the Maldives suspended three ministers for their derogatory remarks regarding PM Modi and the people of Bharat. The ministers, Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid, were promptly suspended after criticizing Modi’s social media post about his visit to Lakshadweep. The ministers alleged that the post aimed to portray the Union Territory as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.
In response to the escalating diplomatic tension, the Maldives government issued a statement, clarifying, “The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives.”
