New Delhi: Ending weeks of drama, Rahul Gandhi finally gave his resignation letter to step down from the post of Congress President. He has asked the Congress Working Committee to choose the new party chief. In his resignation letter he said that he is taking full responsibility for the failure of the party in the Lok Sabha elections.
The Gandhi scion wrote in his resignation letter, “As President of the Congress party, I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party.”
Rahul Gandhi also shared his resignation letter on Twitter and said that he will continue his fight against BJP ideology. After submitting his resignation his Twitter handle changed his designation from ‘President of Indian National Congress’ to ‘Member of Indian National Congress’.
Since the humiliating defeat of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi has been speaking of stepping down from his post. As usual the Congress leaders began to beg the Gandhi scion to continue and the chorus against his resignation became louder.
Senior leaders over the course of the month also persuaded Rahul Gandhi not to step down. Several party leaders offered their resignation to deflect the blame from Rahul Gandhi.
Senior Congress leaders like Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Ahmed Patel had asked him to continue as the Working President of the party.
Two days back Rahul Gandhi had met with all the Chief Ministers of Congress ruled states of Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, and Chhattisgarh. Reports say that the Chief Ministers also requested him to stay at the helm of the party’s affairs.
However, Rahul Gandhi knew that this time the usual drama is not sufficient to absolve him of the responsibility of the tremendous failure of the Congress party. Though the party leaders feel that Rahul Gandhi must stay to keep the party together, the general public has judged him to be a failure to lead the grand old party.
Meanwhile, outside the Congress party office in New Delhi, many leaders and party workers gathered to protest against the resignation of Rahul Gandhi. One party worker went so far as to climb a tree and threatened to commit suicide if Rahul Gandhi did not reconsider his decision to step down. However, he was soon persuaded from his ‘act’ and brought down.
