New Delhi: In a historic move, the Border Security Force (BSF) is set to showcase its all-women marching and brass band contingents during this year’s Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path. An Assistant Commandant and two subordinate officers will lead a total of 144 women BSF constables as they march down Kartavya Path on January 26, on Bharat’s 75th Republic Day. The prestigious event will be graced by Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, serving as the chief guest.
The BSF has named this contingent the ‘Mahila Foot Contingent,’ reflecting the diverse representation of women from almost every state in the country. Among the participants, a maximum of 27 will be from West Bengal, followed by 10 each from Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, 12 from the North East, and others from various states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, among others.
Commandant Kamal Kumar of the BSF’s 25th Battalion expressed that the Government of Bharat aims to maximise women’s participation in the Republic Day parade. In addition to the marching contingent, a 72-member brass band, including a bandmaster and two assistant bandmasters, will be participating in the parade for the first time.
BSF’s women marching contingents join other Central Armed Police Forces in sending their women contingents to march on Kartavya Path this Republic Day. The Ministry of Defence had last year asked all the forces, state governments, and departments participating in the Republic Day parade to have women participants in their contingents, bands, and tableaux.
