New Delhi: In a bid to give more teeth to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, the Union Cabinet decided to include the death penalty. The move comes after crimes against women and children are on the rise across the country.
After amending the Act to include the death penalty, the Cabinet said that the decision was to make punishments more harsher for those involved in sexual crimes against children.
The Cabinet amendments also include imprisonment and monetary fines for those caught for circulating child pornography. The government believes that the amendments to the POCSO Act will help deter child abuse and protect the interest of minors in times of distress.
The government’s move will be welcomed by people from all walks of life who were demanding more harsh punishments for those engaged in sexual crimes against children.
