Ranchi: Champai Soren officially assumed the role of Chief Minister of Jharkhand on Friday afternoon. This development comes just two days after the arrest of the former Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case. Champai Soren will be required to prove his majority in a floor test to be scheduled in the next 10 days.
Governor C P Radhakrishnan finalized Champai Soren’s appointment late on Thursday night, 24 hours after Hemant Soren’s resignation from the post. Hemant Soren submitted his resignation to the Governor on Wednesday night, just before facing arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on charges of money laundering.
The 67-year-old Champai Soren enjoys the support of 43 MLAs from the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance. Notably, two MLAs, one from Congress and one from RJD, also took the oath alongside Champai Soren. The swearing-in ceremony marks a temporary resolution to one aspect of the crisis that has gripped Jharkhand.
