Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly will hold a special session today, February 5, to discuss and pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. Officials have stated that the Bill will be passed after the discussions.
With this, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to implement the UCC. The report places UCC emphasis on gender equality and equal rights for daughters in ancestral properties. The UCC bill is scheduled to be introduced in the Assembly on February 6.
Yesterday, the Uttarakhand Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, approved the UCC draft bill based on the recommendations made by a high-level government-appointed committee. The five-member committee, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, was set up by the state in May 2022 and handed over the draft report to the government.
Sources report that three state governments plan to enact the UCC before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
