Howrah: Reports say that the woman who petitioned against the Triple Talaq which finally resulted in the Triple Talaq Bill has filed a complaint of being threatened by a mob comprising of Muslim individuals. Notably, the mob was irked at her for attending a Hanuman Chalisa recital function.

Ishrat Jahan, the woman who fought for justice against Triple Talaq, had joined the BJP recently which had also raised objections from her community members. The Hanuman Chalisa event was organized at Sankatmochan Hanuman Temple in Howrah.

After attending the event Ishrat Jahan was stopped by a Mustafa Ansari and Manazir Hussain, who is also her landlord. They threatened her for participating in the Hindu event. The landlord asked her to vacate her house and leave the place where she is currently living.

Ishrat in her complaint she mentions that she has been receiving death threats ever since she filed a petition against Triple Talaq. The Muslim mob also had a problem with her wearing a Hijab to the Hanuman Chalisa recital event.

She told the Indian Express,“I had gone to the event as it was a religious programme. I had gonethere wearing a hijab. Some people saw me on television attending the programme. Today, they stopped me on the road and wanted to know why I had attended the programme. They even abused me for wearing hijab to the programme. They said they would drive me out of my house and asked me to leave the area. I ran to my house. Later, I went to Golabari Police Station to lodge a complaint and sought police protection.”

Ishrat Jahan also said that she fears for her life and her family’s safety. However, she added that India is a secular country and it is her democratic right to attend any religious festival.

The 33 year old Jahan was one of the five women to petition the Supreme Court against the evil practice of Triple Talaq existing in the Muslim community. The apex court had struck down the practice calling it unconstitutional.

Ishrat Jahan herself had to undergo the injustice of Triple Talaq when her husband divorced her over the phone in 2014 by saying ‘Talaq’ three times.
