Mumbai: Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan announced his resignation from the primary membership of the Congress party on Monday, signalling a potential move to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Chavan’s decision was confirmed by his submission of resignation to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole. Within a month of Congress leader and former Union Minister Milind Deora joining the Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, a second leader has left the party. This will be another major blow to Congress.
Ashok Chavan is the son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan. He is one of the most influential leaders among the Congress leadership in Maharashtra. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra State from December 8, 2008, to November 9, 2010.
