New Delhi: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi is reportedly being considered for a Rajya Sabha seat, with possibilities arising from either Rajasthan or Himachal Pradesh. According to reports a high-level meeting convened yesterday at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss this matter, and a final decision is anticipated shortly.
Currently serving as the sole Congress MP from Uttar Pradesh, Sonia Gandhi’s potential move to the Rajya Sabha comes amidst speculation that her reelection prospects in Raebareli have diminished. There are rumors circulating that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may contest from the Raebareli constituency, although the Congress leadership has not yet addressed these reports.
Raebareli holds historical significance as the constituency from which Rajiv Gandhi’s father, Feroze Gandhi, and Indira Gandhi, contested elections. Notably, Indira Gandhi faced defeat in the 1977 elections from this constituency. Sonia Gandhi has consecutively represented Raebareli in the Lok Sabha since 2004, but reports suggest she might withdraw from the upcoming contest due to perceived low chances of victory.
As Sonia plans her exit from the constituency, there are calls from the state unit for Rahul Gandhi to return to Amethi, his former constituency where he faced defeat in the last election.
