New Delhi: Former Additional Solicitor General of India and constitutional lawyer Fali S Nariman passed away on February 21, 2024, Wednesday. The 95-year-old renowned jurist and senior advocate experienced a cardiac arrest and breathed his last at his residence in New Delhi, around 1 am today.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Fali S. Nariman, the best constitutional expert India has ever seen. PM Modi through his post on X said that Nariman was one of the best lawyers of the country.
Shri Fali Nariman Ji was among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals. He devoted his life to making justice accessible to common citizens. I am pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.

Nariman received the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007. He was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 1999-2005.
Nariman was born to a Parsi family in Myanmar on January 10, 1929. He started his law practice at the Bombay High Court in 1950 and later moved on to Supreme Court. The National Judicial Appointments Commission verdict is among the several landmark cases of Nariman during his long career of 70 years.
Nariman was a vocal critic of injustices he saw in the country. In May 1972, he was appointed the Additional Solicitor General of India, but resigned in protest when the Indira Gandhi government imposed Emergency rule in June 1975.
Nariman has also been vocal in his defence of the basic structure of the Constitution. His most recent book, You Must Know Your Constitution, provides a comprehensive look at the document and judicial decisions around it.
Many senior advocates also expressed their condolences for the loss of the great lawyer.
In a post on X, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi termed it “an end of an era”.
Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal in a post on X, said, ” A great son of India passes away. Not just one of the greatest lawyers of our country but one of the finest human beings who stood like a colossus above all. The corridors of the court will never be the same without him. May his soul rest in peace.”
