Gangtok: Sikkim, the only state in the country without access to railways, is all set to undergo a rail connectivity revolution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for Sikkim’s first railway station today.
Deputy Railway Manager of Alipurduar, Amarjeet Agrawal, said that the Rangpo station is crucial from a touristic and defensive standpoint for both Sikkim and to our motherland, Bharath. Amarjeet Agrawal also shared his happiness and pride that Sikkim, which did not have a railway line, is going to get an extensive rail system in three phases. He added that the project will complete in three phases. It is reported that the first phase of the rail project is from Sevoke to Rangpo; in the second phase, from Rangpo to Gangtok; and the third phase, from Gangtok to Nathula.
The Sikkim Railway Station is being constructed as part of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Project, which was launched in October 2009.
The railway line’s projected length is almost 45 km, spanning from West Bengal’s Sevoke to Sikkim’s Rangpo. The line will have five stations in total, including one in Teesta Bazar, which could be India’s first underground halt station. The line will have four open crossing stations at Sevoke, Riyang, Melli and Rangpo. According to project director Mohinder Singh, out of 45 km, three and a half km is part of Sikkim state and 41.5 km is part of West Bengal.
