Ernakulam: The Prime Minister is set to introduce Bharat’s first domestically manufactured hydrogen-fueled boat to the nation tomorrow. Crafted by the Cochin Shipyard, the hydrogen fuel cell ferry boat is designed to navigate in the waters of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), revealed that the Prime Minister will virtually inaugurate the vessel at 10 am tomorrow. Notably, hydrogen fuel stands out for its complete eco-friendliness, rendering the boat service entirely pollution-free.
Primarily designed for short-distance river travel, the boat has a capacity to accommodate up to 100 passengers. If proven successful, plans are underway to construct cargo boats and traditional boats utilising hydrogen fuel. The first hydrogen-powered boat was built on an experimental basis for the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
