Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Bharat’s first under-water metro tunnel in Kolkata on Wednesday. The Prime Minister launched the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section of the Kolkata Metro during a public event in Kolkata.
The newly inaugurated route contains six stations, including three underground stations. The Green Line of the East-West Metro Corridor features stations such as Howrah Maidan, Howrah Station Complex, and BBD Bagh (Mahakaran), all constructed by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC). 10.8 km of this route passes beneath the Hooghly River.
The metro will cover a distance of 520 metres below the Hooghly River in 45 seconds. Howrah station stands as the deepest metro stop below sea level, positioned 33 metres below the surface. This project forms part of the broader East-West Metro Corridor initiative, aiming to establish seamless connectivity between Howrah Maidan and Rajarhat.
