New Delhi: The Election Commission has announced the ‘vote-from-home’ option for citizens above 85 years of age and individuals with disabilities for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The Lok Sabha polls is slated to commence from April 19 across seven phases, along with assembly elections in four states. This marks the first instance of such a provision being offered by the poll body.
The commission also outlined multiple provisions for people with disabilities and those who need assistance t ensure accessible and inclusive voting.
- Eligible voters above 85 years of age and individuals with disabilities meeting a 40 percent benchmark can opt for voting from home
- Polling stations will be equipped with volunteers and wheelchairs to assist voters.
- Special transport arrangements will be made for persons with disabilities and senior citizens.
- The Saksham app will be available for accessing special facilities at polling stations.
- There is a push for establishing permanent Assured Minimum Facilities in schools, enriching the election process and involving students.
With the Lok Sabha elections scheduled in seven phases from April 19, the voting process will commence with the first phase on April 19, followed by subsequent phases on April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1, respectively.
