Thrissur: The Human Rights Commission has taken suo moto cognizance against Kalamandalam Satyabhama in connection with casteist abuse against Chalakkudy-based Mohiniyattam dancer RLV Ramakrishnan. Commission member Binakumari suggested that the Thrissur district Police Chief, Culture Department, and Government Secretary should submit a report within 15 days.
The incident of insulting the renowned artist and dancer RLV Ramakrishnan came to light yesterday. In an interview with a YouTube channel, Kalamandalam Satyabhama stated that those who perform Mohiniyattam should embody the qualities of a Mohini, possessing enchanting or attractive traits. She commented that upon seeing RLV Ramakrishnan, he appeared to her as the color of a crow. Satyabhama emphasized that Mohiniyattam is characterized by parted feet, and she expressed that it seems awkward for a man to perform with parted legs. In her opinion, male performers of Mohiniyattam should be handsome, as she believed there are indeed handsome men capable of performing the dance. She further remarked that even his own mother couldn’t bear his displeasing appearance.
Following this, there was widespread protest against Kalamandalam Sathyabhama, with many prominent individuals coming forward in support of RLV Ramakrishnan. But Sathyabhama states that she stands by her abusive remarks. The incident led to massive protests in the arts and culture sector. Protests are also intensifying at RLV College, demanding an apology from Satyabhama. A poster regarding this has also been raised.
In condemning the incident, Kalamandalam stated that associating its name with individuals who make uncivilized statements is a stain on the institution.
