Thiruvananthapuram: After the Human Rights Commission, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC & ST) Commission has voluntarily intervened in the incident of casteist abuse by dancer Satyabhama. Regarding the incident, the commission has instructed the State Police Chief to investigate and submit a report within 10 days.
The SC & ST Commission stated that Satyabhama has made statements insulting all black artists socially and castewise. The commission also noted that she was not willing to apologize or retract her statement regarding the incident, even when approached by the media. Therefore, an investigation is deemed necessary.
The incident of insulting the renowned artist and dancer RLV Ramakrishnan came to light last Thursday. In an interview with a YouTube channel, dancer Satyabhama stated that those who perform Mohiniyattam should embody the qualities of a Mohini, possessing enchanting or attractive traits. She commented that Ramakrishnan’s colour was that of a crow. Satyabhama emphasized that Mohiniyattam is characterized by parted feet, and she expressed that it seems awkward for a man to perform with parted legs. In her opinion, male performers of Mohiniyattam should be handsome, as she believed there are indeed handsome men capable of performing the dance. She further remarked that even Ramakrishnan’s own mother could not have beared his displeasing appearance. The incident led to massive protests in the arts and culture sector.
