Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has spent significant sums on legal expenses. Crores of rupees are being spent on lawyers appearing in the Supreme Court on behalf of Kerala in the borrowing limit case.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Kerala, has sought Rs 2.35 crore as fees to appear in SC on behalf of Kerala government, but only Rs 75 lakh have been sanctioned by the government so far. Additionally, the Kerala government has spent Rs 93.90 lakh on legal advice since 2021. Figures from the Advocate General’s office also reveal that Rs. 8.25 crore was spent on lawyers who appeared in the Supreme Court representing the Kerala government during this period. Additionally, Rs. 88 lakh was disbursed as fees to the lawyers appearing in the High Court on behalf of the Kerala government.
Furthermore, the Kerala government has expended Rs. 96,34,261 on legal representatives to avoid a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the Shuhaib murder case. Additional expenses were incurred in providing legal defense for CPI (M) activists implicated in the murder of Kripesh and Sarath Lal in Periya, Kasaragod. The Kerala government enlisted lawyers from outside Kerala for this case, spending a total of Rs. 1,14,83,132 on their fees.
Notably, Rs. 24.50 lakh was remunerated to advocate Maninder Singh for his representation on behalf of the Kerala government in the Periya case in the Supreme Court.
The Kerala government has disclosed in the Legislative Assembly that Rs. 2,11,17,393 was spent from the government treasury to defend CPI (M) activists ,accused in both the Shuhaib murder case and the Periya case.
