Idukki: 90-year-old Ponnamma, who took to headlines for protesting against the government after her welfare pension was suspended for months, passed away. She passed away when she was yet to receive six months of her pension.
Ponnamma passed away today (March 31) at 2 pm due to age-related ailments.
Ponnamma, a resident of Karuppupalam, near Vandiperiyar in Idukki, was in the news after she staged a protest this February, sitting on a chair in the middle of the road connecting Vandiperiyar and Vallakkadavu in Idukki, against the delay in the distribution of her welfare pension.
The protest continued for an hour and following the intervention of the Vandiperiyar police, Ponnamma ended the protest.
Ponnamma protested against the government in the middle of the road on February 8, as she did not have enough money to buy medicine and household goods. But many people including CPI(M) leader EP Jayarajan came forward to insult her protest.
Ponnamma, who was chronically ill, was unable to complete the mustering process earlier. The process was later completed when there was persistent demand to visit Ponnamma’s house and complete the mustering.
However, her pension was delayed due to the failure to submit the income certificate, informed her relatives. Later, the officials issued an income certificate and she received pension for a month. But, six months of her pension was still pending, said her relatives.
