Thiruvananthapuram: Fishermen in Thiruvananthapuram coastal region vehemently criticized the CPI(M) for not addressing their issues. They stated that CPI(M) leaders only visit coastal areas during elections for campaigning.
Fishermen from Pozhiyoor, Thiruvananthapuram, said that the Kerala government has not implemented any security measures despite sea rage affecting several in the Pozhiyoor coastal area. Locals also complained that the CPI(M) focuses solely on vote banks and neglects the coastal people’s concerns.
Furthermore, locals criticized the Kerala state Minister for Fisheries, Saji Cherian, and the MLA for failing to visit the affected region and take steps to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of the people, despite the sea rage affecting the area.
They also blamed Shashi Tharoor, Thiruvananthapuram MP, for only visiting the region during election campaigns over the past 15 years. Thiruvananthapuram district, coastal Pozhiyoor, Puthiyathura, Poovar, Anchuthengu, and Adimalathura were among the worst affected.
Previously, Union Minister for State and Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha NDA candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar had visited Pozhiyoor to assess the coastal region’s problems. Following his instructions, a team led by Bengaluru Central Institute of Engineering for Fishery (CICEF) Director Venkatesh Prasad and Deputy Director Nagaraj arrived in the region for a study. It is reported that the team will analyze the problems facing coastal communities, including coastal encroachment, and submit a report to the central government to find sustainable solutions for the region.
