Kannur: The police, today, took into custody the car used by CPI(M) MLA A. N. Shamseer for allegedly being used to hatch a conspiracy to kill former communist leader C. O. T. Nazeer.
The Innova car with license number KL-07 CD 6887 is in the name of Shamseer’s brother. However, it is Shamseer who is using the vehicle for his official trips with the official ‘MLA’ board.
The police will send notice to Shamseer for questioning him and to record his statement about his involvement in the murder attempt. Reports say that the car was presented to the police station after the ‘MLA’ board was removed.
According to the police investigations, the accused who attempted to kill Nazeer hatched their conspiracy in the Innova car used by Shamseer. The MLA’s driver Ragesh had met with the prime accused Santhosh in the car and planned the attack to eliminate Nazeer.
Nazeer had earlier accused Shamseer for trying to kill him because of the political rivalry. The police was trying to trace the car when investigations revealed that the vehicle was used to plan the conspiracy.
A huge controversy arose when media reported that Shamseer had come to a CPI(M) District Committee meeting in the same Innova. Subsequently he left the meeting in another vehicle after reporters broke the news to the public.
C.O.T. Nazeer was attacked on 18 May, a few days before the election results came out. Nazeer, a former ward councilor and communist leader, left the party in 2015. During the recent Lok Sabha election, he contested as an independent in Vadakara constituency. This did not go down well with the communist leadership who saw this as an attempt to split the communist vote share in the constituency.
Nazeer was chased and hacked repeatedly by CPI(M) goons on the night of 18 May. The gruesome attack was caught on CCTV which shocked the public. He was run down by a motorcycle and attacked.
Fortunately, Nazeer was rushed to hospital where he survived the attack. He had to spend many weeks in hospital to recover. He sustained grievous injuries to his head, stomach, hands, and legs. The assailants aim was to kill him, however, Nazeer escaped that fate narrowly.
