Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has moved to form an investigation team in the state, following the model of the CBI. The state government is planning to establish a State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) dedicated to investigating only serious cases.
There was a strong demand for a CBI inquiry into the death of a student at Pookode Veterinary University, leading to the case being handed over to the CBI. In response to the general demand for high-profile and serious cases to be handled by the CBI, the government is considering establishing an investigation team modeled after the CBI within the state. This team would comprise experts from the state police.
Former DGP Lokanath Behera had previously shared a similar proposal with the government. Although preliminary discussions regarding the formation of SBI were held at that time, no further action was taken. The state government is now attempting to revive the idea originally put forward by Behera in the current scenario.
Behind the government’s move is the fear that public opinion will be formed in such a way that the families of the victims will demand a CBI investigation due to the shortcomings of the state police system.
