Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is experiencing a remarkable surge in the sales of electric vehicles (EVs). According to data released by the Ministry of Transport, Kerala has seen a substantial increase in the number of EVs hitting the roads.
In 2024 alone, an impressive total of 25,460 electric vehicles have been registered. This year’s figures reflect more than double the number of EV owners compared to the preceding year.
In 2023, the state witnessed a considerable jump with 75,790 electric vehicles hitting the roads, nearly doubling from the figures of 2022, which stood at 39,616. The trend continues as data from the Parivahan system indicates a steady increase, with 8,743 electric vehicles launched in 2021 and 1,366 in 2020.
This surge in electric vehicle ownership is attributed to a decline in the popularity of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-fueled vehicles. Despite the widespread availability of LPG across the state, the data suggests a diminishing preference for such vehicles. Currently, an estimated 86,538 LPG vehicles are in use.
In 2023, only 17 fuel-only vehicles and eight LPG vehicles, which can be interchangeably used with petrol and LPG, were registered in the state. According to figures on the Parivahan website, by 2022, 29 LPG vehicles and 42 bi-fuel vehicles will have been registered.
