New Delhi: In a major embarrassment for the Kerala government the Supreme Court slammed Kerala government for allowing illegal construction of multi-storey building in the coastal zone.
The Supreme Court had on 8 May ordered that five apartments in Marad municipality in Ernakulam district for violating the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. However, the government has not executed the court’s order.
Kerala Chief Secretary, Tom Jose, had to bear the brunt of the apex court for the lapse of the Kerala government.
The court also said that it will fix responsibility on the corrupt officials involved in illegal constructions.
Supreme Court asked the Chief Secretary how much time the government needed to demolish the apartments. To this Tom Jose asked for a three months times. However, the court did not agree to this.
The Court also observed that a detailed study must be done into the construction of buildings in the coastal zone. The court also asked who was responsible for last years flood in Kerala.
Though the Kerala government was represented by senior and well known lawyer, Harish Salve, the government had to face embarrassment in the Supreme Court today.
