Palakkad: A police officer, Haridas, belonging to the tribal community from Attappady has complained to the Chief Minister and DGP about the harsh discrimination he is facing in the police department. However, the police department or the Chief Minister’s office hasn’t reacted to the police officer’s grievances.
Instead, the police station he belongs to has sent him a memo after he gave complaints. He is also ordered to join hs work as soon as possible.
Surprisingly, Hairdas is a decorated officer, who has received the badge of honour. He has also been instrumental in the hunt for Maoists and also in discovering areas where drug-plants are cultivated.
Haridas had written to the Chief Minister and the police chief that he is discriminated against for coming from a tribal community. He wrote that he is facing constant ridicule and harassment for his background. When his letter was leaked to the media it raised a public outcry. Instead of ensuring that Haridas gets justice, the police department sent him memos questioning about his letter.
Haridas says that he has been facing discrimination since the time he joined the police force seven years ago. His main complaint is against 5 officers who have ridiculed his tribal status.
He also alleges that one police officer belonging to the Special Branch called up his wife and threatened her when Haridas’ complaint was highlighted in the news.
Though the Special Branch took the statements of Haridas and also of those against whom he had raised the complaint, the department is only trying to hush-up the incident.
