Thiruvananthapuram: In a surprise twist, the CPI(M) made a sudden U-turn on its stand of charging UAPA on two CPI(M) members arrested for their links with Maoists. The State Secretariat of the CPI(M), today, decided that there is no need to get involved in the issue.
However, the party will not take any immediate action against Shuhaib and Fazal, both of whom were arrested for links with the Maoists.
Interestingly, the Kozhikode District Committee of the CPI(M) reported to the State Secretariat that the duo has relations with Maoists. The report also says that the situation is grave.
CPI(M) had earlier taken a tough stand against charging the accused under the stringent UAPA and three Polit Bureau members spoke publically against it.
The General Secretary of CPI(M), Sitaram Yechury, Prakash Karat, and M. A. Baby had told that charging UAPA is wrong. They also criticized the state police which comes under Pinarayi Vijayan.
However, the present volte-face of the party is surprising. It seems that they have abandoned their opposition against charging UAPA as the evidences against the two are serious.
