Thiruvananthapuram: A hunger strike is organized in the state capital on 16 December, to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. Interestingly, both the ruling Left Democratic Front and the parties belonging to the United Democratic Front will take part in the strike jointly.
In a rare show of unity the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala together with other ministers and leaders of political parties will take part in the hunger strike at 10 am on that day at the martyr’s column at Palayam in Thiruvananthapuram.
They will demand the withdrawal of the CAA on the basis of protecting constitutional values.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has said that CAA would not be implemented in the state because if divides people. However, many legal experts believe that the state has no other option but to execute the law passed in Parliament. Citizenship is under the purview of the Central government.
