Palakkad: A CPI(M) activist, Subramaniyan, was arrested for raping a 8-year old girl at Walayar in Palakkad. When he was brought by the police to gather evidence, the crowd protested and got violent against the accused.
Some got injured after the police jeep rammed into them while the police was trying to control the unruly crowd.
The police brought the accused to gather evidence by seven in the evening. A huge crowd including women and children thronged the place. Many carried brooms and stale eggs to attack Subramaniyan.
When the crowd began to get violent the police intervened and tried to control them. In the commotion, a police jeep rammed into the crowd injuring a few. The crowd also broke the windshield of the police jeep in anger. The court has remanded the accused.
In 2017, two minor Dalit sisters at Walayar were raped by three men, who were also members of CPI(M). The girls were found dead hanging from their house. The police and the prosecution worked in tandem to help all the accused to escape the law.
Consequently, all the three were acquitted by the POCSO court because the prosecution failed to frame a foolproof case against the accused. However, the acquittal led to large scale protest against the communist government. The government was forced to order a re-investigation into the case.
