Kollam: An Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker was thrashed today for pasting information about polio vaccination on the boundary wall of a house. ASHA worker, Maheswari Amma, was brutally attacked by Sainulabdin and his family members.

Police has charged a case against Sainulabdin and his family for attacking the government employee.

Maheswari Amma came to the house as part of her duty to identify any children who are not vaccinated. The members of the house said that there were no children under the age of five.

The ASHA worker then proceeded to write the number on the wall which was protested by the house owner. She was then thrashed and the bottles containing the polio drops were destroyed.

Maheswari Amma is now under treatment at the Taluk Hospital. Sainulabdin and his family is charged with destroying public property and causing hindrance to the duty of the ASHA worker.

Incidentally, there are reports that the families of many children of the Muslim community have resisted attempts to give polio vaccination to their children. This is widespread in districts like Malappuram where there is a large Muslim population.
