Kottayam: The police arrested a person from Malappuram district for spreading fake news that the government has arranged transportation for the migrant workers living in Kerala to return to their home states. District Collector, Jafar Malik, in his Facebook post said that the police had registered a case against the person behind the fake news.
The Malappuram resident had spread the fake news that the government had arranged train service through social media. The District Collector said that the news was a fake and strict action would be taken against those spreading false information.
There is widespread belief that the fake news led to hundreds of migrant workers converging at Payipadu in Kottayam district demanding food, water and transportation to their home states. The police arrived on the spot and convinced them to return to their lodgings and to stay there until the lockdown is lifted.
