Kochi: Mayor Soumini Jain criticized state government for failing to give financial assistance to run community kitchens amid coronavirus lockdown. The Mayor said that the government did not even pass the promised Rs 50,000 from the Kudumbasree Mission and therefore, the corporation fund is being utilised to run the community kitchen.
She said that it would be difficult to pay salary to the employees next month if usage of corporation fund continues. The Mayor said that they had approached the government several times in a bid to seek financial assistance, but in vain. Only 600 kgs of rice was received for the community kitchen.
On March 26, Kochi Corporation started to run community kitchen. Initially 5 kitchens were running, later in collaboration with Kudumbasree 12 more kitchens started functioning. It is estimated that Kochi Corporation provides food to 10,000 people daily.
