New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe has now progressed to UAE in connection with the gold smuggling case. The Centre has granted permission to travel to UAE.
An official at the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the NIA will examine those who handle the diplomatic baggage in UAE and about the hawala transaction, distribution of hawala fund and people involved in it.
The NIA team is likely to take Faisal Farid and Robinson into custody, the main accused in the case.
Officials at the consulate cannot be interrogated as they have diplomatic privileges. The NIA will see permission of the UAE government in this regard.
On the other side, Customs department on Monday submitted a copy of the statement by Swapna Suresh, to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (Economic Offences). The 32 page-statement was submitted to the court in a sealed envelope.
