Kochi: NIA on Monday stated that the charge sheet in the Gold smuggling case is ready and is likely to be filed in the court by 6 or 7 of this month. The NIA team said they are trying to repatriate the suspects in the foreign countries in connection with the case.
If the charge sheet is not filed within 180 days from the date of the first remand, the accused will be liable to default bail. All the accused in the case except the those charged by the COFE POSA will be granted bail under this provision. The right of default bail is lost once the charge sheet is filed.
The NIA is preparing to file the charge sheet in the case before the Special NIA court in Kochi so as not to affect the investigation of the case. A number of people, including Faisal Fareed, who is still abroad, are yet to be arrested in the case.
The investigating agency is bound to filer the charge sheet in NIA cases before the court within 180 days from the arrest of the first accused. The first arrest in the Gold Smuggling case was recorded on July 11.
