New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday announced that he families of the deceased and the boat owner in the Italian Marines case, will be paid a compensation of Rs10 crore by the Italian government.

Two fisherman, one being a Malayali, were shot dead by the security guards aboard in Enrica Lexi ship on 12 February, 2012. The fishermen were mistaken to be pirates by the security guards Lasthora Masimiliano and Salvathoro Leon.
Kollam resident Valentine Jalastine and Ajesh Pink from Kanyakumari were the ones who got killed. The Italian government has said that they will pay Rs4 crore each family and Rs2 crore to the boat owner.

The case was last heard by the Supreme Court on July 8 in the wake of an international tribunal ruling. Chief Justice SA Bobde had said at the time that Italy should pay compensation. The Kerala government demanded Rs15 crore but Italy said it could pay only Rs10 crore.

Meanwhile, others on the boat have come up against ending the case by paying compensation only to the relatives and dependents. They have lodged complaints with the Center and the state government regarding the same.
