Kochi: A season of hope and happiness, Onam is nearing. ‘Atham’ falls today in the month of Karkkidakam, unlike Chingam every year, which marks the beginning of ten day Onam festival. Onam is a time where people celebrate together with families, wearing traditional attire and with traditional rituals. At homes, grand ‘Sadhya’ is prepared. Covid has changed many things for people, various challenges has come up. But people still celebrate festivals within the restrictions keeping hope and happiness alive.
Atham star started at 8:54 am today. In the olden days, Malayalees used to decorate their courtyard with ‘Pookalam’ from the month of Midhunam itself. Ramayana parayanam (reading of Ramayanam during evening) & Karkkidakam will end on 16th.
Covid situation in the state is still high and hence celebrations of people will be at home with restrictions. Shops are open, a bit of relief for the business community.
Atham festivities at Thripunithura begin today. Like last year, this year too Atham celebrations will be restricted to traditional rituals in Thripunithura as per the decision of Thripunithura Co-operation. The flag to hoist at Atham nagar was received by Thripunithura Co-operation Chairman from the representative of Thripunithura Royal Family, Nirmala Thampuran yesterday. This is the first time a woman representative has handed over the flag. Flag will be hoisted at Thripunithura Model Boys High school. Cultural clubs have come up with Onam programs with traditional flavour and also programs to encourage youth.
Festivals and celebrations keep our spirits high, increase our happiness, togetherness and preserve traditional values.
