Thiruvananthapuram: Reports suggest that the police are trying to frame BJP Thiruvananthapuram General Secretary and Corporation councilor VG Girikumar on a trumped-up case. The case involves the burning of a homestay run by the pro-left and self-styled guru, Swami Sandeepananda Giri.
However, the police say that VG Girikumar was involved in the conspiracy behind the burning of the homestay and made his arrest today afternoon.
In protest against the arrest, BJP activists staged a march towards the Secretariat. The march was inaugurated by BJP State General Secretary, P Sudhir. The police also arrested BJP activists who tried to cross the barricade erected by the police.
P Sudhir accused the police of helping the real culprits escape by arresting BJP activists on fake charges.
He said that the incident occurred in 2018 and after four years and two Assistant Commissioners investigating the crime, the police have not been able to crack the case.
Sudhir said that the CCTV visuals, which would have been the major evidence, were destroyed in the preliminary stages of the investigation itself. The Crime Branch, which is investigating the case do not have single evidence against VG Girikumar. He accused that the Crime Branch is obeying what the CPI(M) commands it to do. Even the available evidence is not being investigated properly.
VG Girikumar, who is the councilor in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has been taking a strong stand against the corruption of the CPI(M). He was instrumental in bringing out the corruption in the Scheduled Caste fund scam, which had put the CPI(M) on the defensive.
P Sudhir continued that political rivalry was behind the arrest and accused that the party and Sandeepananda Giri was behind the arson. He said that a truthful investigation will bring out this truth. He also warned of strong resistance if the left government thinks it can silence BJP with forged criminal cases.
