Kollam: The killing of Dr. Vandana, in the line of duty by an accused, has led to widespread condemnation and protests. Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan expressed shock in the incident. He said that the concerns being raised by Kerala doctors have been proved to be completely true.
V Muraleedharan said that 137 reports of attacks against doctors were reported last year alone and added that it is a shame that most of the victims were lady doctors. The minister said that the state government must show responsibility towards the people. Women equality, Kerala Model, etc. must not remain in study classes alone, he said.
Meanwhile, BJP activists have blocked the Kollam-Kottrakkara road in protests. They refuse to budge even after police intervention demanding justice in the incident. The BJP accuses the police of negligence in the crime.
The High Court will convene a special sitting today in response to the crime. As the courts are closed on account of summer vacations, the HC is holding a special sitting in view of the serious crime.
The Kerala University of Health Sciences has submitted a plea before the HC demanding security for medical students. Interns and house surgeons must be provided security. The present security given to health workers must be extended to medical students working in hospitals, said the plea.
