Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is planning to burden the people with increased power tariffs. The KSEB will announce its four-year power tariff this June. It is believed that the charges will be hiked significantly. The Electricity Regulatory Commission has conducted a public hearing in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Association of Domestic Electricity Consumers in Kerala has said that they would approach the High Court if charges are increased.
The present power tariff is valid only up to June 30 this year. The new tariff will be announced by mid-June and the new charge will come to effect on July 1.
KSEB has said that household consumers using up to 40 units of power will be exempted from the hike. Those in the other slabs will incur 15 to 20 paise for the first two years and 5 paise per unit for the third year. The KSEB has not demanded a price hike in the fourth year.
The KSEB is of the opinion that the tariff of those household consumers who use between 50 and 200 units per month must be increased significantly. The KSEB also made it clear that no change in tariff is needed for those who use above 500 units per month.
The electricity board also demanded that the fixed charge must be raised to Rs.30.
