Ernakulam: District Sports Council President and MLA P V Srinijin locks out hundreds of students from the school ground in Panampilly Nagar, where the selections for the Under-17 Kerala Blasters were happening. As the protests grew stronger, Sports Minister V Abdurahiman intervened, leading the corporation councillors to reach the spot and open the gate.
The MLA said that he locked the gate of the school because the team management has not paid the rent due to the Sports Council. He added that a collective amount of ₹8 lakhs for eight months’ rent is due and that the Council even sent a letter to them regarding this.
At the same time, Kerala State Sports Council President U Sharaf Ali clarified that Kerala Blasters have settled their dues since last month. He also said that Blasters and they have an existing contract of one year, and within this period there is no need for any prior permission to conduct trials or use other facilities. Prior permission should only be sought when conducting tournaments or for other commercial purposes.
Sharaf Ali said that the event in Kochi was regrettable and should have been avoided.
