Kottayam: The protest in the suicide case of Sradha Satheesh, a second-year Food Technology student, at Amal Jyothi College of Engineering at Kanjirappily, Kottayam, turned violent after police lathi charged the agitating students. Sradha hanged herself, allegedly, after being harassed by college management and teachers for using mobile phone in the lab.
The college management had asked the students to vacate the hostel rooms after announcing that the college will be closed. However, the students refused to vacate the hostel rooms and began agitation to get justice for Sradha. The students are demanding the removal of hostel warden and head of food technology department.
The police and the agitating students entered into a scuffle after the police began lathi charging the agitating students without any provocation. The students also accused the management for threatening them that internal marks will be lowered and that they would lock the students in the college.
On June 2, Sradha Satheesh was found dead in the college hostel. Students allege that teachers had harassed the student mentally. They accuse the Head of the department and a few other teachers for harassing her for using mobile phone. The students also accuse teachers of threatening them in the name of internal marks.
The students also allege that the management tried to hide the fact that Sradha had committed suicide by saying that she had collapsed after taking her to the hospital.
The Amal Jyothi College is managed by the Catholic Diocese of Kanjirapally.
