Malappuram: Devotees are raising protests in a village, Muthuvallur, in Malappuram district against encroachment of temple land by the panchayat and private individuals. These private individuals have encroached on the land of Ambalaparamb temple land to build buildings.
Daily rituals were conducted at the temple earlier. However, with the onslaught of Tipu Sultan in the Malabar regions and during the genocide of Hindus in Malabar rebellion, the temple got destroyed.
As per documents a Shiva Temple and an Ayyappa Temple were there. Remains of idols were recovered at the temple property.
In the resurvey conducted in 1980, the place was marked as temple land of the Mangadu Devaswom. After that it was changed. The documents itself shows that the land came under private individuals by tampering with the Revenue documents.
The temple was under Mangadu Devaswom earlier. The devotees are asking how a building permit was allowed by the panchayat on temple grounds.
The devotees have retrieved old documents, prepared by the Britishers, from the archives. This documents show that the temple has 47 cents of land. The temple property includes the 55 cents of Perumkulam and 17 cents of Ambalakulam.
Meanwhile, the Muthuvallur panchayat tried to make the temple pond, Ambalakulam, into a public pond. The panchayat had decided to change the pond’s name and inaugurate it as ‘Ambaal Kulam’. Fortunately, the devotees were able to stall the inauguration.
The devotees are working hard to reclaim the temple lands. They are first planning to give a complaint to the Collector and Revenue officials. Additionally, they are planning to move legally also.
