Ernakulam: A doctor from Kollam, Dr. Ganapathy, has leveled serious charges against Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi. In his complaint, the doctor alleged that Lakeshore Hospital, in 2009, left a young man of eighteen years to brain death and then donated his organs to foreign individuals. The First Class Judicial Court in Ernakulam has taken a case against the hospital on the doctor’s complaint.

The court has also taken a case against eight doctors. Summonses have been sent to all the accused.

The incident occurred on November 29, 2009. Eighteen-year-old VJ Abin was admitted to the Lakeshore Hospital after being involved in an accident. A blood clot was formed in Abin’s brain following the accident.

However, without treating it, the hospital authorities left the patient to die of brain death, according to the complaint. If a blood clot occurs there is a procedure to make a small hole in the skull and prevent death from occurring. However, the doctors did not attempt that procedure and left Abin to die, said the complaint.

Later Abin’s organs were donated to foreign individuals. The complainant said that the hospital authorities did not follow any procedures before donating the organs to foreigners. The court accepted this and proceeded to send summonses to the accused.

The Lakeshore Hospital has come out with an explanation in the incident. The hospital authorities claim that the wound was severe and it would have caused continuous damage to the brain. The authorities added that correct medical treatment was given to Abin and his organs were transferred after the permission his family.
