Thiruvananthapuram: Fever cases are shooting up in Kerala with the onset of monsoons. It is estimated that a total of 1.75 lakh people have sought medical treatment for fever at state government hospitals in June alone. Yesterday 13,582 sought treatment for fever. 38 people have already died since the beginning of this month.
Dengue fever and rat fever (leptospirosis) is also taking a toll on people’s lives. Of the 38 deaths, 22 people had succumbed to dengue fever. Leptospirosis has also caused many deaths in the state. Cases related to dengue and rat fever continue to be reported daily from across the state.
A report said that 133 persons reached Government hospitals with dengue on Wednesday. Till yesterday the total number of dengue cases in the state was 1,168. If the figures of people seeking treatment at private hospitals are also taken into account, then the total number of dengue cases and fever cases will be higher.
There health department has warned that there is a possibility that fever cases might go up in the coming month of July. The department has also suggested that children and elderly people must wear masks. In addition, the health department has said to destroy the sources that lead to breeding of mosquitoes. The people are also advised to prevent water from getting stagnant in their surroundings.
