Malappuram: A report said that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has accused the Minister of Sports, Wakf and Haj Pilgrimage, V Abdurahiman, for helping the owner of the ill-fated boat to get permit. The boat tragedy in Tanur had killed 22 persons.
Criticisms were raised about the faulty condition of the boat at that time. There were reports that the boat was actually a fishing boat and that it was altered and pressed into tourism service.
According to the report, IUML accused that the Minister and a local CPI(M) leader Anilkumar had helped the boat owner, Nassar to get permission to operate the boat.
IUML leader, MP Ashraf said that the Chief Surveyor had rejected the fitness certificate for the boat four times before finally giving permission. The Chief Surveyor is responsible for the safety.
Muslim League also demanded the police to check the call history of port officials and of Minister V Abdurahiman and Minister of Ports, Ahammad Devarkoil (Indian National League). IUML also demanded checking the call history of the ministers’ staff and also of the CPI(M) local leaders. This will bring out those who helped Nassar, said the party.
The party says that the Special Investigation Team conducting the investigation is trying to protect those who had influenced the officials to give permission to Nassar to start tourism boat service.
However, the CPI(M) leadership denied the allegations and said that it were all baseless.
